    Is a plenum box needed for the supply side of AC or could metal Y’s be used? About 10’ from my handler is a plenium box that comes in with a big foil duct (maybe 16”) and exits the box at a right angle and exits with 3 different sized foil ducts (10”, 6” and 4”). Couldn’t i just use a Y into another Y to keep the air flow running straighter instead of a right angle and eliminate the box? I assume making right angles slows air flow. (The rooms with the 6” and 4” ducts don’t get as cool. I Was going to install in line booster fans for them too.). (Hawai’i so AC only, no heat).

    So in open plenum systems is it just the AHU return fan sucking all the ambient air in the general direction of the AHU just more slowly than ducted returns?

    • @TitusHVAC
      @TitusHVAC 8 месяцев назад

      Yes, open plenum systems are only ducted on the Supply through which the conditioned air is delivered to the occupied space. The Return side of the unit is open to the plenum above the ceiling grid and pulls air from the surrounding plenum space. This means that the HVAC equipment will need a filter on the unit directly at the return to filter the plenum air. Because the Return side of the unit is open to the general air space in the plenum, the air velocity near the HVAC equipment will be lower than the velocity traveling through Return ductwork. However having the Return open to the plenum space rather than ducted means the motor will work against lower ESP than a ducted Return system. Question, @3:24 you say that you don't want to run both coils at the same time, but earlier the discussion was about preheat vs reheat. ...Aren't the heating coils running concurrently with cooling in both scenarios? Thank you

    • @TitusHVAC
      @TitusHVAC 10 месяцев назад

      In preheat, very cold, possibly subfreezing air is being drawn into the system and must be heated before it can be used, so only the heating coil is being used. And reheat may be required if high dehumidification results in lower than normal cooling temperatures. This of course is to be avoided if at all possible, because it results in simultaneous heating and cooling.

    Atually the required air flow to create pressure differential is dependent on the air flow across the doors. Thus door size and leakage round the door is important.

    Question do you need filter in that handler because the return air has a filter

    • @TitusHVAC
      @TitusHVAC Год назад

      Although it is sometimes desirable to filter return air at a return air grille, it is standard practice to filter all air at the air handler. This is necessary to keep the air handler coils clean.

    Where i live heat and humidity are kept outside with a large HVAC system, i only want to infuse some fresh air into it. A ERV seems overly complicated and expensive. there is a way to keep the heat outside and bring in fresh air. It has to do with where the fresh air is being drawn in. I am trying to design a system that is much simpler and still provides exactly what i want.

    • @TitusHVAC
      @TitusHVAC Год назад

      As I understand, your existing HVAC system purely cools/heats and recirculates indoor air. As such you have no real need for an ERV. If that is the case, you could simply introduce fresh (outside) air without tempering it, but doing so we increase the cooling/dehumidifying and heating loads your existing HVAC system has to handle. If you are comfortable that it is capable of handling the increased loads that is one option. However, you might you will also need to exhaust a similar volume of the room air as that outside air you brought in. You might consider adding a plate type heat exchanger serving the outside and exhaust air streams to minimize the effects on your existing HVAC system.

    Post one for Return Linear diffusers with no plenum, to be hold by the drywall ceiling frame

  • @salim5192
    @salim5192 Год назад

    Thank you for the explanation. You mean in Series box due to the suction pressure of the fan there won't be any loss of energy? But the induced air inlet is always open and also has least resistance too, for the air to be escaped?

    • @TitusHVAC
      @TitusHVAC Год назад

      The parallel unit must have a backdraft damper, because the fan does not run during the cooling mode and the primary air path is under positive pressure. In a series unit, the fan runs during both heating and cooling and the entire cabinet moves between neutral pressure and a slightly negative pressure. Most balancing contractors set the fan on a series unit to draw slightly more airflow than the primary maximum airflow for this reason. A properly balanced and operational series unit doesn’t require a backdraft damper because there should be no air escaping from the induction port. For additional questions contact us at tu@titus-hvac.com.
